Reflections on Guest Speakers in Class 1/30/2020

Top 3 Takeaways:

Here are my takewaways from today’s speakers:

  1. Connections are key! Meeting new people and finding ways to connect with them can give you more opportunities. Having a variety of people in your contacts can lead to a multitude of things in life, whether it be a job opportunity, a life-long friend or someone you can consult with.
  2. “Short term profitability is NOT greater than long term credibility.” -Mike Reed. Applying this to a personal aspect, building yourself for the long run, not just making it seem like you are the best now is going to provide a better outlook on life. From a business perspective, it is not always about being the latest and greatest thing on the market, it is about having your roots run deep within the company’s position.
  3. The internet provides countless options to hunt for new jobs and find connections. Whether it be using a job board or finding a start up company you want to work for and contacting them!

Top 3 Strategies to implement:

Here are the strategies I would like implement to this semester:

  1. Go to events and meet more people! I need to create more connections with those who have established themselves in the business world. Putting myself out there is something that I’m not always comfortable with but that needs to change.
  2. Push myself to look past graduation. Rather than just seeing that light at the end of the tunnel, I need to work on building my “long term credibility.” Having an outlook that reaches past graduation or immediately after increases my drive and determine to be the best I can be.
  3. Use the internet to my advantage and have a resume that’s ready to be presented at any time. There are plenty of job boards that I can be checking regularly to see all the opportunities that are out there.
